Full day biking and cultural immersion
With AKD Bike Tours, you will be led by English speaking students from the AKD School, which gives them an employment opportunity and an international interaction. The students are well informed about Battambang and it’s tourist sights and can give you an inside view to the young, future generation of Cambodia.
Tour Activities
( 8.00 am – 15.00 pm )
- Pick-up from hostel ( 7.30 am )
Kamnat, the father of AKD, will pick you up from your hostel in his tuk tuk.
- Depart from school for the ride (8.00 am)
After been driven to the heart of the AKD project, you will collect your bikes and meet your tour guide. This will either be Kamnat or one of the older students who have been specially trained for the tour.
- Visit and breakfast at the local market
Discover some of the local delicacies and enjoy a traditional Cambodian breakfast, before heading off into the countryside. (included)
- Biking to the countryside
First stop: Meeting with an elder who survived the Khmer Rouge genocide
Cambodia has a hugely interesting but equally horrifying history. Discover the stories of the Khmer Rouge, as told by an elder who survived the tragic genocide. Between 1975 – 1979, the Khmer Rouge killed approximately two million people. Though Pol Pot’s reign officially ended in 1979, the Khmer Rouge were still present in the new millennia.
Second Stop: Farming
Farming has played a vital role in the lives of Cambodian people. In 1985, farming employed approximately 80% of the Cambodian workforce. Enter a farm and learn about the production of rice, animals and other crops.
Third stop: Learn to throw a fishing net at the fishing village
As you explore the local markets you will notice fishmongers chopping away besides an array of live fish in big buckets. Visit a nearby river and learn how to throw a fishing net. If you’re lucky, you might catch your own!
- Lunch with a Cambodian family
After discovering the countryside, you’ll arrive back close to the AKD school and get some local lunch.
(Learn how to use local herbs and spices in a culinary masterclass, as you help Kamnat prepare a delicious lunch. You’ll probably be hungry from all the cycling, so tuck in and enjoy).
- Interact with children at AKD school
After lunch settles, you will get the chance to get an inside view to the English education project, AKD. You can interact with the current volunteers and ask them questions about their experience and daily life at AKD. At this time of the day the young students got classes. During the break you have the chance to talk to them. However, if you wish to get more involved, you can help a teacher assisting a class. And who knows maybe you will find yourself volunteering at this project for a bit.
- Meeting with a monk at the pagoda
The perfect end to this cultural experience is a meeting with a monk. Buddhism plays a huge role in the spirit of Cambodians. Find out about Buddha, Buddhist beliefs and the life of a monk through fascinating conversation. You may have already seen monks on the street during morning alms, explored temples and pagodas. This is the perfect time to ask all those unanswered questions sparked by your curiosity.
